I first met Matt in 1999; he was behind the decks, I was behind the bar. Music was the common language, the pulse of late nights and early mornings. In 2001, I painted his portrait, layered with the rhythms of his own electronic compositions, capturing a moment in time.

Two decades later, I returned to that painting, not to recreate it, but to remix it. Like a track that evolves through reinterpretation, this portrait fuses past and present, a reflection of both memory and momentum. Elements of the original remain, sampled and reworked, much like the beats Matt has woven into dance floors for over 30 years.

A stalwart of Australia’s techno scene, Matt has shaped soundscapes across the country and beyond. A founding member of the Melbourne Techno Collective, resident DJ at some of the city’s most revered clubs, and a supporter of legends like Carl Cox and Jeff Mills, his influence is undeniable.

This painting, much like his music, is about movement, evolution, and the enduring connection between sound and self.
