Abyss is a testament to transformation—a work that has lived many lives before arriving in its current form. It began in 2008 as a stripped-back, minimal composition combining painting with printmaking techniques, focused on texture and impact. But this was only the beginning of its journey.
In 2014, I took it off the stretcher and placed it on the studio floor, allowing it to capture the marks left behind from other works. Over time, sections were sliced, sampled, and collaged onto new constructions. I’ve always been drawn to the idea of destruction as a form of creation—through dissection, the work evolved, demanding reassessment and ultimately finding resurrection on a fresh canvas.
Seven years later, it returned to the studio one last time, taking on new forms, composition, and meaning. It is now indiscernible from its past, yet somehow still holds the essence of its journey.
Often, we don’t know what lies on the other side of the abyss—but that isn’t always a bad thing.
